چکیده

In the propositional modal (and algebraic) treatment of two-variable first-order logic equality is modelled by a ‘diagonal’ constant, interpreted in square products of universal frames as the identity (also known as the ‘diagonal’) relation. Here we study the decision problem of products of two arbitrary modal logics equipped with such a diagonal. As the presence or absence of equality in two-variable first-order logic does not influence the complexity of its satisfiability problem, one might expect that adding a diagonal to product logics in general is similarly harmless. We show that this is far from being the case, and there can be quite a big jump in complexity, even from decidable to the highly undecidable. Our undecidable logics can also be viewed as new fragments of firstorder logic where adding equality changes a decidable fragment to undecidable. We prove our results by a novel application of counter machine problems. While our formalism apparently cannot force reliable counter machine computations directly, the presence of a unique diagonal in the models makes it possible to encode both lossy and insertion-error computations, for the same sequence of instructions. We show that, given such a pair of faulty computations, it is then possible to reconstruct a reliable run from them.

GENERALIZED FLEXIBILITY-BASED MODEL UPDATING APPROACH VIA DEMOCRATIC PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHM FOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE PROGNOSIS

This paper presents a new model updating approach for structural damage localization and quantification. Based on the Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC), a new damage-sensitive cost function is introduced by employing the main diagonal and anti-diagonal members of the calculated Generalized Flexibility Matrix (GFM) for the monitored structure and its analytical model. Then, ...

On Modal Products with the Logic of 'Elsewhere'

The finitely axiomatisable and decidable modal logic Diff of ‘elsewhere’ (or ‘difference operator’) is known to be quite similar to S5. Their validity problems have the same coNP complexity, and their Kripke frames have similar structures: equivalence relations for S5, and ‘almost’ equivalence relations, with the possibility of some irreflexive points, for Diff . However, their behaviour may di...

Complexity of Products of Modal Logics

A relatively new way of combining modal logics is to consider their products. The main application of these product logics lies in the description of parallel computing processes. Axiomatics and decidability of the validity problem have been rather extensively investigated and many logics behave well in these respects. In this paper we look at the product construction from a computational compl...

Incremental Decision Procedures for Modal Logic with Nominals and Eventualities

This thesis contributes to the study of incremental decision procedures for modal logics with nominals and eventualities. Eventualities are constructs that allow to reason about the reflexive-transitive closure of relations. Eventualities are an essential feature of temporal logics and propositional dynamic logic (PDL). Nominals extend modal logics with the possibility to reason about state equ...

Providers and Patients Caught Between Standardization and Individualization: Individualized Standardization as a Solution; Comment on “(Re) Making the Procrustean Bed? Standardization and Customization as Competing Logics in Healthcare”

In their 2017 article, Mannion and Exworthy provide a thoughtful and theory-based analysis of two parallel trends in modern healthcare systems and their competing and conflicting logics: standardization and customization. This commentary further discusses the challenge of treatment decision-making in times of evidence-based medicine (EBM), shared decision-making and personalized medicine. From ...
